How to Replace Mouse Skates (Step-by-Step Guide)

Mouse skates (also called mouse feet) are what let your mouse glide smoothly across your pad. Upgrading or replacing them can make a big difference in how your mouse feels, especially if your current skates are worn out or uneven.

Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to removing old skates and installing new ones properly.

Installing New Mouse Skates

1. Set Up Your Workspace
Start with a clean, well-lit area so you can see exactly what you’re doing. Have your new skates ready, along with a microfiber cloth, rubbing alcohol, and something to help remove the old skates (like your fingernail or tweezers).

2. Clean the Mouse Base
Before applying anything new, make sure the bottom of your mouse is completely clean. Use a microfiber cloth with a small amount of rubbing alcohol to remove dust, oils, and leftover residue.
A clean surface is key for the new skates to stick properly.

3. Remove the Old Skates
Carefully lift the existing skates from one edge using your fingernail or a small tool. Peel them off slowly to avoid damaging the mouse. If any adhesive is left behind, don’t worry, you’ll clean it in the next step.

4. Remove Any Residue
After taking off the old skates, wipe the surface again with alcohol to remove any leftover adhesive. Let it dry fully before moving on.

5. Apply the New Skates
Take your new PTFE or UHMWPE skates and line them up with the correct positions on the mouse. Once aligned, press them down firmly so they stick evenly.
Repeat for each skate, making sure everything is straight and properly placed.

6. Let Them Set
Give the adhesive a moment to settle.
Then place your mouse on your pad, apply light pressure, and move it around slightly to help the skates fully bond.

Removing Mouse Skates
If you just need to remove skates (without immediately replacing them), the process is straightforward:

1. Lift from the Edge
Use your fingernail or a small tool to gently lift one side of the skate.

2. Peel Slowly
Pull it back carefully and steadily to avoid leaving too much adhesive behind.

3. Clean the Surface
Use rubbing alcohol and a microfiber cloth to remove any remaining residue and leave the base clean.

Final Thoughts
Replacing your mouse skates is quick, simple, and one of the easiest upgrades you can make. Fresh skates restore smooth glide, improve consistency, and keep your mouse feeling like new.

If your glide feels off, scratchy, or uneven, it’s probably time for a fresh set.
